Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa

Overview

The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) is a points-tested permanent residence visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory government, or a family member. It is designed for applicants with qualifications and experience in occupations listed on Australia’s Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

Key Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation
  • Have a nominated occupation on the MLTSSL
  • Obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority
  • Achieve at least 65 points under the points test
  • Demonstrate Competent English (e.g., IELTS 6.0 in each component or equivalent)
  • Meet Australian health and character requirements

To apply for a subclass 189 visa, candidates must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the SkillSelect system. Only those who meet the minimum points threshold and are ranked competitively may receive an invitation to apply. The current minimum score is 65, but in practice, higher scores are often required to secure an invitation.

The MLTSSL includes nearly 200 occupations in demand across Australia. Fields such as accounting, IT, engineering, nursing, and teaching are among the most commonly nominated by international graduates.

All applicants must undergo a formal skills assessment, which is conducted by one of Australia’s officially recognised assessing authorities. There are currently 28 different authorities, each responsible for assessing specific occupations. Note that the assessment criteria set by these authorities may differ from the visa eligibility criteria set by the Department of Home Affairs.

In terms of English proficiency, a minimum of IELTS 6.0 (General or Academic) in each band is required to lodge an EOI. Higher scores, such as IELTS 7.0, can contribute an additional 10 points. Applicants who do not meet the higher English thresholds may still improve their eligibility through a Professional Year (PY) program or by completing the NAATI certification test in community languages. Alternatively, they may consider applying through a state or territory nominated pathway (e.g., subclass 190).
